Veterinarians know that bad breath in dogs and cats isn’t something to be ignored. Bad breath can be a sign of dental problems and might also signify other serious health risks, with the potential to damage not only a pet’s teeth and gums, but also internal organs including the heart, liver and kidneys.
Regular check-ups for our furry friends are necessary to maintain good dental hygiene and protect their overall health. By the age of just three, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some form of periodontal disease. Routine cleanings not only can help prevent periodontal disease and save money in the long run, but also allow for a complete oral examination that can detect hidden health problems. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective way to maintain dental health between professional dental cleanings. If you’re not sure how to brush your pet’s teeth, ask your veterinarian for advice or a demonstration. Your veterinarian also can advise you how often your pet should have a dental cleaning. But you also should keep an eye on your pet’s teeth to check for any signs that dental disease has already started. If you notice any of the following symptoms, take your pet in to see your veterinarian immediately: · Red swollen gums · Bad breath (similar to the smell of a rotten egg) · Teeth that are broken, loose, discolored or covered in tartar · Abnormal chewing, drooling or dropping food from the mouth · Bleeding from the mouth · Shying away from you when you touch the mouth area · Frequent pawing or rubbing at the face and/or mouth · Reduced appetite or refusal to eat · Weight loss For more information about National Pet Dental Health Month, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) website at www.avma.org/PetDental. The AVMA sponsors National Pet Dental Health Month every February and has a variety of materials on how you can improve the dental (and overall) health of your pets.

Thanks for pointing out that regular check-ups would be necessary to maintain good dental hygiene and protect their overall health. With that in mind, we should look for a pet dental cleaning service near us to get the oral health of our dog taken care of. It's because we've had this dog for a year now, and we never got his dental health checked that is why I am worried about this aspect.

It helped when you mentioned that bad breath might signify other serious health risks and can be a sign of dental problems. My cousin who was a veterinary mentioned to me last night that she is hoping to find a reliable provider of ultrasound for small animals and asked me if I have any idea where is the best option to buy. Thanks to this informative article and I'll be sure to tell her that she can consult a professional veterinary equipment shop as they can answer all her inquiries.

Thanks so much for listing a bunch of symptoms you can look out for that show potential dental disease in your pet. I have a friend with an older dog and he wants to make sure he lives the best last years of his life. We've been looking into finding a nearby vet that he can take him to get regular checkups and dental cleanings since that wasn't a focus of his previous owners so he has poor teeth.

I totally agree when you said that maintaining the oral health of our pets can be achieved with regular checkups. Since I plan to have a dog this summer, I should start looking for a vet I can trust here in Adelaide. Once I buy the breed I wanted, I should have it vaccinated as soon as possible to prevent illnesses, especially when it is still a puppy.

Pets also play significant roles in the lives of children, helping them develop important skills like empathy, responsibility, and patience. Growing up with a pet can teach children the importance of caring for others and the daily responsibilities involved in nurturing a living being. This sense of responsibility often extends beyond just feeding and cleaning; it involves understanding the needs of another creature and learning how to meet them consistently. For children, this can also be an early lesson in emotional intelligence, as they learn to interpret and respond to their pet’s behavior. These skills, when learned early in life, have long-lasting impacts, shaping more compassionate and responsible adults. Furthermore, children who interact with pets are shown to have better social skills, as they practice communication, empathy, and affection with their furry friends.
